What brought you to Alliance Spine and Pain Centers?

I have been suffering from severe neuromuscular pain syndrome with spasms since the age of 17. Unfortunately, the pain only became more intense as I got older.

What issues did you need to be resolved? How were they addressed?

For over a year and a half, I was in and out of the hospital seeking relief for my pain. Then, I was referred to Dr. Omar Hajmurad at Alliance Spine and Pain Centers. He sat down with me and discussed different treatment options. After having limited success with medication and procedure management, Dr. Hajmurad suggested a spinal cord stimulator (SCS) trial to help with my bilateral low back and leg pain, which was averaging 8.5-9/10 on the pain scale.

This trial helped relieve my pain and improve my quality of life so much that I elected to move forward with the SCS implant. My pain is currently a 4/10 on the pain scale and has not been this low in years.

Tell us about the Alliance physician you worked with.

From the very first day, Dr. Hajmurad was open and honest about my treatment plan. I felt that he always on my side as we figured out a solution.

What lesson do you want those reading your story to learn?

At first, I was really nervous about the SCS trial. However, I am so grateful that I decided to move forward with it. It significantly reduced the amount of pain I felt and improved my quality of life.

How are you doing now?

Not only has the spinal cord stimulator helped relieve my pain by 50%, it has also allowed me to sleep better too, which gives me more energy when I wake up and puts me in a better mood. Overall, l just feel happier!

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO ALLIANCE SPINE AND PAIN CENTERS?

I started seeing Dr. Pallavi Gupta back in 2017 for chronic lower back pain. After I discussed my issues, Dr. Gupta knew I needed a left and right Lumbar RFA treatment, a minimally invasive procedure. She treated me at the Dallas office and I could return home the same day. My pain symptoms have improved drastically.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT OUR PRACTICE?

Because Dr. Gupta assessed my needs on a personal basis, the treatment is helping me have a quality of life. She’s always upfront and honest with me. I love how confident Dr. Gupta is in her work, and it shows in how she works with me!

Dr. Gupta is also thorough, knowledgeable, and informative, which is comforting and encouraging. Whenever I’ve needed her, she always follows up the same day. All of these characteristics are hard to find in a provider, but Dr. Gupta has them all!

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO ALLIANCE SPINE AND PAIN CENTERS?

I knew I needed help because I reached a point with my pain where it was too hard to walk, do household chores, and play outdoors with my grandkids. When I came to Alliance Spine and Pain Centers, Dr. Rhee W. Miller, MD suggested a spinal cord stimulator for my neck and upper back pain. I received it, and now I’m feeling much better!

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT OUR PRACTICE?

The Conyers and Covington staff is like family. I LOVE Dr. Miller, and I would follow her anywhere she goes.

HOW ARE YOU DOING NOW?

I’m doing very well! My pain has been reduced to about 85-90%! Most importantly, I’m able to play with my grandkids again. I even rafted down the Chattahoochee river for my granddaughter’s 7th birthday this summer!

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO ALLIANCE SPINE AND PAIN CENTERS?

I’ve been visiting Dr. S. Christopher Cable, MD for lower back pain for the past two years! When I first came to his office, Dr. Cable suggested lumbar RF ablations, which worked. I’ve been extremely happy with my level of relief and how long it’s lasted! For just one treatment, I’ve had 18 months of 100% relief. I can go back to doing everything I love.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT OUR PRACTICE?

Dr. Cable is AWESOME!  I used to feel like an “old man” before my treatment, but Dr. Cable makes me feel like Superman when I get off the table. He’s so great at what he does.

The Woodstock staff is awesome too – from Check-in to the OR.  They make you feel good and are so nice. To help me feel comfortable before a procedure, the Alliance team takes the time to describe it to me in detail. They give me options and make sure I have a full understanding of all of them, which I really appreciate.

HOW ARE YOU DOING NOW?

I’m back to normal now with my daily routine and doing the things I love to do.

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO ALLIANCE SPINE AND PAIN CENTERS?

I’ve always been a very active, energetic, and outgoing person. I enjoyed riding horses and running. Unfortunately, this enthusiasm has brought on a lot of pain over the years, which included developing scoliosis, being thrown off horses, and damage to my pituitary gland from a head injury. Needless to say, I hurt all over all the time.

When I went to a different clinic, I was given a combination of drugs to relieve everyday pain.  However, my primary care physician suggested seeking pain relief from an interventional pain management clinic to stay off narcotics, which brought me to Alliance Spine and Pain Centers!

I am very thankful I had found Alliance because I ruptured a disc throwing fertilizer in the garden shortly after I started my care there. Dr. Pallavi Gupta, MD treated me with radiofrequency ablation (RFA) six months ago, and I haven’t had any more pain.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT OUR PRACTICE?

I met Dr. Gupta for the first time when I was there for my procedure and immediately loved her. She’s really, really good. I was so nervous, but Dr. Gupta was smiling down at me and that reassured me I was in good hands.

As a former high school teacher in the area, many of the Alliance staff at the center were my students, which is so precious to me. Everyone is so sweet and gets along. They treat all patients with kindness and create a calm and peaceful atmosphere.

WHAT LESSON DO YOU WANT THOSE READING YOUR STORY TO LEARN?

You can’t lay down and quit. Take the time to educate yourself if you feel unknowledgeable about your pain care treatment and follow your healthcare provider’s advice to lose weight if needed. You have to keep living.

HOW ARE YOU DOING NOW?

I now have very little pain! When weather changes and fronts come through, I might have some trouble with my knees. However, if it wasn’t for the RFAs, I wouldn’t be up and going!

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF

What Brought You to Alliance Spine and Pain Centers?

Over 20 years ago, I took a hard fall and it caused a ruptured disc. After it happened, I began to experience a series of unrelated, but painful issues including breaking my back twice, suffering from arthritis, and having additional falls.

The pain took over my life and made me miserable. I couldn’t stand or sit. I received injections, had two neck fusions, and tried several other treatments. Unfortunately, nothing worked for long.

After taking oral medications for my chronic pain, I got a Medtronic pain pump implant (intrathecal pain pump implant) at Alliance. The implant delivers pain medication directly to the cerebrospinal fluid, which reduces the side effects from oral opioids such as nausea, constipation, and drowsiness.

Tell Us About the Alliance Physicians You Worked With

Dr. “Nok” Keomahathai is a good doctor and makes me feel comfortable. I like his manner and trust him. You can’t say that about everyone. When I was about to give up, he saved my life.

I have been a patient of Dr. Nok’s for many years and continued to see him when he moved from his previous practice to Alliance. I also followed him from Alliance’s Dallas location to Alliance’s Cartersville location, when he re-integrated Cartersville in his practice.

What Lesson Do You Want Those Reading Your Story to Learn?

Don’t give up on seeking pain relief. A variety of treatment options are available for chronic pain. You have to work with your doctor on finding the right treatment or combination of treatments that alleviate your pain. Help is out there!

How Are You Doing Now?

Prior to the Medtronic pain pump implant, my pain ranged from a 6–10 out of 10 on the pain scale. Now, I can tell the pump is working because I feel like myself again. I am sleeping well and doing many of the things I used to be able to do before.

My treatment no longer involves taking any oral pain medications, which makes me so happy! I feel more energetic and less foggy-headed since I stopped taking them. Friends and family say my personality is back to normal again.

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO ALLIANCE SPINE AND PAIN CENTERS?

Despite many incidents of back pain throughout my life, I always recovered or was able to “work through it.” I started experiencing pain in my early days of playing football as a youth and it continued with nerve damage from injuries suffered in Vietnam while serving in the military.

I did not let back pain deter me and was still doing all the physical activity I had always done until the age of 65. Then, the pain became unbearable. A hip replacement relieved pain in my right side, but I still had back pain that radiated to my legs. Gabapentin and physical therapy kept that pain under control for several years. However, the pain intensified and I was referred to Dr. Jordan Tate at Alliance in February 2019.

Immediately, Dr. Tate treated me with epidurals and ablations, which provided temporary relief.  When they didn’t provide lasting relief, Dr. Tate recommended a Spinal Cord Stimulator trial with the Nevro HF10 in October 2019, followed by an implant two months later. That procedure made me feel normal again!

I clicked with Dr. Tate right away. She’s wonderful and deserves all the accolades. Not only does she really care, Dr. Tate provides state-of-the-art care.

HOW WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH ALLIANCE SPINE AND PAIN CENTERS?

The Alliance team is optimistic and shows great appreciation for the patient. Alliance nurse practitioner, Emily Cummins guided me through the process incredibly. I also appreciated the session with Dr. Andrea Elkon, Alliance’s psychologist who made sure I was qualified for the procedure.

Everyone at Alliance treats my wife and me wonderfully. I have zero negative things to say about the practice.

WHAT LESSON DO YOU WANT THOSE READING YOUR STORY TO LEARN?

If you are open in your communications about the pain you’re experiencing, you will get great results from this team.

HOW ARE YOU DOING NOW?

After the Spinal Cord Stimulator trial with the Nevro HF10, I got immediate relief that has continued to this day. This status surpassed my goal of at least 50% relief. I’ve also been able to stop wearing the back brace that was my constant companion for two years before it.

I am happily married with three children, five grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Since I no longer have pain, I’ve taken up golf again. I also volunteer weekly at the Georgia Department of Veterans Service.

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO ALLIANCE SPINE AND PAIN CENTERS?

After my retirement, I moved to the Atlanta area from Virginia and began to have back issues due to arthritis a few years later. I was recommended to Alliance Spine and Pain where I tried epidurals followed by ablations. With both treatments, I immediately felt relief, but the pain eventually returned.

Dr. Nok Keomahathai recommended a Spinal Cord Stimulator implant. Originally, I was resistant to it, but my wife reminded me of the inconvenience of some of my past pain. I knew I wanted to be productive and continue to do the things I love, which made me willing to give this treatment a try.

Dr. Nok definitely knows what he’s doing! He has good ideas.

HOW WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH ALLIANCE SPINE AND PAIN CENTERS?

From the anesthesiologist to the assistants, everyone is phenomenal! They show an incredible level of professionalism and hard work in the way they handle us as patients. They are absolutely wonderful!

WHAT LESSON DO YOU WANT THOSE READING YOUR STORY TO LEARN?

Don’t be afraid to look for opportunities. Try new things to improve your health so you can live a better life.

HOW ARE YOU DOING NOW?

I have resumed much of my normal lifestyle. I chop wood and spend time outside. I’ve even been able to paint the exterior of my entire house, along with other significant building and home improvement projects. I can now play golf again after stopping about a year ago because of the pain.

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO ALLIANCE SPINE AND PAIN CENTERS?

I had pain that was a constant 9 out of 10 and felt like a “couch potato” prior to a surgery I had with Alliance. I trusted Dr. Rosenfeld 100%, so when he suggested SI fusion, I was totally on board.  SI Fusion is a minimally invasive, same day, procedure for sacroiliac joint disruptions. I had a right-side SI fusion in January of this year.  It went so well that Dr. Rosenfeld elected to do my left side in February.  Since both surgeries, I can now confidently rate my pain a 0 to 1 out of 10.

WHAT LESSON DO YOU WANT THOSE READING YOUR STORY TO LEARN?

This procedure has made a 100% difference in my pain, and I would suggest it to anyone with SI pain.

HOW ARE YOU DOING NOW?

I enjoy going to the park with my kids, which I’ve not been able to do in years. I also love going on walks.

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO ALLIANCE SPINE AND PAIN CENTERS?

For the past 20 years, I’ve had a bad lower back and the pain has intensified the past six years. My ability to walk was limited, forcing me to use a wheelchair to maneuver around the airport. I couldn’t stand very long without leaning on something, and my daughter thought I would never walk normally again.

My doctor suggested receiving an epidural at Alliance Spine and Pain Centers. I was skeptical at first, but I decided it was worth visiting.  Dr. Jordan L. Tate diagnosed me with spinal stenosis and discussed my treatment plan options. We decided I should start with receiving two shots. It gave me relief at the beginning, but it soon stopped.

Because I wanted to avoid back surgery, Alliance was the best place for my pain management treatment. Dr. Tate recommended the Vertiflex procedure. Her simple explanation confirmed it was the right option and it only took an hour to get two implants.

I immediately experienced the positive effects of the procedure by walking out of the clinic and standing upright for the first time in years.  Within a week, I felt no pain and no longer had spinal stenosis.

I’m 100% again. It’s amazing!

TELL US ABOUT THE ALLIANCE PHYSICIAN YOU WORKED WITH.

Dr. Tate is phenomenal.  She’s so smart and easy to talk to. I’ve recommended her to friends, and they have seen her. She and Lacey, Dr. Tate’s nurse, are the best folks you’ll ever want to meet. I am forever grateful to Dr. Tate and her team.

In fact, I called Dr. Tate during COVID-19 quarantine when I didn’t even have an appointment to have the front desk tell her “I love her!”

HOW WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH ALLIANCE SPINE AND PAIN CENTERS?

Everyone in the office is amazingly friendly and attentive. I’ve never felt so comfortable and only have positive things to say.

WHAT LESSON DO YOU WANT THOSE READING YOUR STORY TO LEARN?

Don’t wait if you are in pain. If you’ve been diagnosed with spinal stenosis, do the Vertiflex procedure.  It’s life changing. I thought my life was over, but I am doing great now.

HOW ARE YOU DOING NOW?

This procedure was life-changing, and I’m back to 100%. I don’t have lower back pain anymore, which allows me to ride in the car for a long time again and spend time with my three daughters. I do all my favorite hobbies again like gardening, riding horses, and motorcycling. My husband of 50 years and I have ridden motorcycles into every continental state in the U.S.

I’m absolutely amazed and feel like I’m young again!
