Back in the Swing: Common Golf Injuries, Symptoms, and How to Prevent Them

Apr 09, 2025
At Alliance Spine & Pain Centers, we often treat golfers experiencing pain that interrupts their game and daily life. Here are some of the most common golf-related injuries, the symptoms to watch for, and tips to keep you playing pain-free.

Whether you’re hitting the range every weekend or enjoying the occasional round with friends, golf is a game that demands precision, strength, and endurance. But for many golfers, especially those playing often, the repetitive motion of the golf swing can take a toll on your body, especially your spine and joints.

1. Lower Back Pain

The golf swing puts a high amount of rotational stress on the lower spine. Over time, this can cause strain on spinal discs, muscles, and ligaments — especially if posture or technique is off.

Symptoms:

  • Persistent or sharp pain in the lower back
  • Pain that worsens after playing or while standing
  • Stiffness or reduced flexibility

Prevention Tips:

  • Warm up with dynamic stretches before teeing off
  • Strengthen your core to support your spine
  • Avoid over-swinging — smooth, controlled movements are safer and more effective
  • Use proper swing mechanics (consider a lesson or video analysis)

2. Golfer’s Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis)

This condition affects the tendons on the inside of the elbow and is caused by repetitive force or poor grip technique during the swing.

Symptoms:

  • Pain and tenderness on the inside of the elbow
  • Weak grip strength
  • Pain that radiates down the forearm

Prevention Tips:

  • Use proper grip pressure — too tight increases stress
  • Strengthen forearm and wrist muscles
  • Stretch your wrists and elbows before playing
  • Take breaks if you start to feel discomfort

3. Shoulder Strain or Rotator Cuff Injuries

The shoulder is heavily involved in the golf swing, and overuse or poor mechanics can lead to rotator cuff tears or inflammation.

Symptoms:

  • Shoulder pain, especially during backswing or follow-through
  • Weakness or stiffness in the shoulder
  • Difficulty lifting the arm

Prevention Tips:

  • Focus on shoulder mobility and flexibility
  • Strengthen the muscles around the shoulder joint
  • Avoid over-practicing or pushing through pain
  • Use a proper swing arc to reduce stress

4. Neck Pain

Looking down at the ball for long periods or improper rotation during the swing can strain the cervical spine.

Symptoms:

  • Stiffness or soreness in the neck
  • Pain that may radiate to shoulders or upper back
  • Headaches, in some cases

Prevention Tips:

  • Stretch the neck and upper back regularly
  • Maintain good posture during your swing
  • Keep your head and eyes moving naturally with the swing
  • Use supportive pillows when sleeping to avoid additional strain
